The first night: crate training with HuggiePup and HuggieKitty

The first night in a new home is the loudest one. A puppy or kitten who has always slept against warm, breathing littermates suddenly has a crate, a blanket and silence.

HuggiePup and HuggieKitty were made to fill that silence. This is the routine we suggest for the first week.

  1. Meet during the day

Give your pet the plush in the afternoon with the inserts out. Let them sniff it, lie next to it and leave their own scent on it.

  2. Warm the heat pack

Heat the pack in the microwave for up to one minute, then check it on your wrist. It should feel cozy, never hot. Slip it into the belly pouch.

  3. Start the heartbeat

Press the heart button to start the heartbeat, or the purr on HuggieKitty. One press runs for about four hours; a longer press runs for about eight.

  4. Crate first, then pet

Place the companion in the crate or bed before your pet goes in, so they find it already warm and beating.

  5. Watch for chewing

If your pet starts chewing the plush, calmly take it away for a few hours and try again when they are settled. Most pets bond within a few days.

A warm belly and a steady heartbeat say what you cannot: you are not alone in there.
